Phase two of my Making Money by Saving Money project is to save $40 of our Entertainment budget for the month. We take $100 a month out of our account in cash to spend on movies, eating out, going to the pool and other family fun things. This one will probably be the hardest cut back to achieve. Here are some ways I’m going to attempt this.
* Take advantage of family passes. We currently have a dual family pass to the zoo and the Children’s Museum. We also have a family pass to the local pool. We’ve been addicted to going to the pool this summer which provides a great family activity that is virtually free (because we already dropped the $90 for it). The zoo is open late Wednesdays (during the summer) and the museum is open late Thursdays.
* Seek out and take advantage of free summer events. In June, Prairie Land Dairy Farm had Dairy Days. Everything was free including the food. Morrill Hall has free admission on Thursday nights. We are planning on attending the Lancaster County Fair (after picking up free admission tickets from the gas station).
* Get out! On cooler summer nights, get outside and play! Our girls aren’t big on organized sports, but we’ve managed to get them to play kick ball with us. And who doesn’t love a game of tag?
* Have go-food on hand to avoid the convenience of eating out. Eating out is a huge temptation for us. I’m going to make sure we have go-food if we need to eat on the run and snacks if we need to post-pone a meal until we get home.
* Netflix. For $8.99 a month, we can stream movies and TV shows on our computer or through our Wii.
Any other cheap family fun ideas? How about ways to avoid the drive-thru?
