Our New Friend, Bubbles

It all started two weeks ago with an innocent cough.

A cough here, a cough there.

I'm not a "take the kid to the doctor because they sneezed" kind of mom, but this was different.

Two weeks ago, I took the girls to the doctor for their coughs. "It sounds like an RSV cough, but since they don't have fevers and otherwise look fine, I'm not going to test them." said our doctor. So, we went home.

Friday night, Bernadette had a fever and Clare's cough was definately NOT getting better. So, Saturday morning, we went to the doctor again. Turns out, they both had RSV and now Bernadette has an ear infection. We left the office that day with our new friend, Bubbles the fish.

Nursing babies apparently get all the medicine they need to treat RSV from breast milk. If Clare wasn't a nursing baby, she would have ended up in the hospital. Two year olds, on the other hand, are supposed to naturally deal with it better, so there was no help for Bernadette. They sent a nebulizer, complete with Bubbles the fish mask, home with us to use on Clare for extra help in her fight.

From about 2:00 on Saturday afternoon until about 9:00 that evening, Clare wanted to be held and sleep with occasional nursing. When evening approached, we began to worry. She hadn't slept that much since she had her first shots! On top of that, she began to get a fever. We called the doctor to make sure she was okay, and he reassured us that she would be fine as long as she was nursing. That Saturday was definately her worst day.
The girls and I quarentined ourselves that whole week. The only place the girls went was through the Walgreens drive thru. It was a tough week of beautiful 60 degree days. By the weekend, we had more than a little cabin fever.

We are lifting the quarentine! The girls are better and ready for some play dates!

Interesting side note: Bernadette didn't get sick at all her first year of life. She was jaundice as a baby but the home phototherapy did the trick. Clare had to be hospitalized for her jaundice, has had fevers, colds, RSV. She's dairy intolerant. She is definately our high maintenance baby.

  1. Ugh...what a week! Congratulations on making it through the week SANE! I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that. RSV is so scary. Noah had it when he was about 2 months old and it was painful to watch him cough and to hold him so sick and so tired. It hurts a mother's heart!

Glad you are feeling better! Good luck staying healthy now; it's almost spring! :)
