A Perfect Day for Baking

I made my first loaf of homemade bread back in November (I think). Clare was allergic to dairy, and most store bought bread contains dairy, so I was left to fend for myself. I checked out Betty Crocker's Best of Baking cookbook from the library, and it had a recipe in it for Honey Whole Wheat bread. It didn't look too hard so I decided to give it a try. I haven't had store bought bread since.

I love making my own bread. It takes a lot less time than I thought it would and the result is delicious. I have found ways for Bernadette to be helpful in the process which makes it that much more fun. Nothing gives me quite the satisfaction (in the kitchen) as sharing a few slices of fresh homemade bread with my husband and daughters.

This picture was taken before Christmas. Bernadette is kneading the dough. :)

Today was a perfect day for baking bread. We began mixing it shortly after lunch. Clare was content in her high chair finishing her lunch. I mixed up most of the ingredients and then Bernadette helped with the rest. Her favorite part is adding the flour while I mix until it is just right. Once it was all mixed up and kneaded (her other favorite part), I left it to rise. There was something special about the sun shining into our kitchen today that made the dough rise very well. When all was said and done, the bread was not only delicious, but absolutely beautiful.

These were today's loaves.

  1. Yummy. How about being a kind "neighbor" and bringing some over here! :-) There is something sweet about kids (even boys) helping in the kitchen! Your bread looks fabulous, we'll be over tomorrow morning for breakfast! We'll bring the jam!
