This week, we are scared of bugs. (See Terrible Twos) She wants to play outside in the backyard, but she won't go near her play thing. She is sure that it is covered in bugs and they are all out to get her. Today, I walked around the whole thing with her looking for bugs and we found one little bitty spider. I tried to act interested in it and show her that it has 8 legs and all that good stuff but she wouldn't go near it. I showed her that it was afraid of her and that it would run away if she got close, but she wanted nothing of it.
We went on to the deck and she sat on my lap and I tried to empower her. I made her say "I'm NOT scared of bugs!" and I told her if she saw one, she had to say, "Go away bug, or I will squish you!" She liked saying these things loud and firm but she still wouldn't go near her slide. We went on another bug hunt and found a couple spiders on the retaining wall. I coaxed her in as close as I could get her and had her say "I'm NOT scared of bugs!" "Go away bug, or I will squish you!" Sure enough, the spiders ran away.
Alas, she stuffed her courage in her pocket and played on the swing instead. Oh well. Maybe pretending to be brave will help me to not be so afraid of bugs.
